External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday joined his counterparts from Japan, Germany, and Brazil at the G4 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80), reiterating the group’s commitment to reforming the United Nations, including the UN Security Council.
In a post on X, Jaishankar stated, “Glad to join the G4 Foreign Ministers Meeting along with colleagues Takeshi Iwaya, Johann Wadephul and Mauro Vieira in New York today. G4 reiterated its commitment to reforming the United Nations including the UN Security Council. It also assessed the current state of the Inter-Governmental Negotiation (IGN) process.”
On the margins of UNGA80 and the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting hosted by South Africa, Jaishankar held a series of bilateral meetings. He exchanged greetings with Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Haji Hasan, met UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper to discuss follow-ups from PM Narendra Modi’s recent visit and Vision 2035, and had conversations with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Australian Foreign Minister Senator Wong.
Earlier, Jaishankar addressed the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, emphasizing the G20’s role in ensuring global stability amid geopolitical and economic turbulence. “In a politically & economically volatile international situation, G20 members have a particular responsibility to strengthen stability and give it a positive direction through dialogue, diplomacy, combating terrorism, and enhancing energy and economic security,” he noted.
